We are supremely loving this trend in which major food manufacturers are paring down the ingredient lists, taking out the high fructose corn syrup and transfats and artificial flavors and getting back to actually feeding us…food. Next up, Pillsbury (yes, Pillsbury) who’s just come out with a kinder, gentler refrigerated cookie dough under the Pillsbury simply… name.
The ingredients in the peanut butter cookies: Brown sugar, wheat flower (bleached), vegetable shortening, peanut butter, water, sugar, eggs, baking powder, salt, skim milk, vanilla extract. The chocolate chip cookies follow suit, and that’s presumably a big improvement over the original cookie dough, whose ingredients you can’t even find on the website.
The resulting cookies are pretty darn good as far as the refrigerated stuff goes, although I did like them better hot from the oven than cool. I don’t think the result is quite as good as the Better Bakes cookie dough from Immaculate Baking Co which are totally organic and made with unbleached flour. But the price is certainly right and obviously Pillsbury has the distribution muscle to get it into every Not Exactly Whole Foods market near you.
Two thumbs up for big brands taking steps in the right direction. –Liz
