Just call me Princess Sparkleknuckles

I used to be into understated beauty. Then I had kids. Now I have to shout just to be noticed, so not surprisingly, I favor bright skirts, dangly earrings, and statement shoes. Oh, and big fat rings that keep people from noticing my unpainted nails. That’s where this shiny treasure comes in. The crystal and eco-friendly Sono wood Treteaux ring from Objets D’Envy melds tough and feminine together into a highly wearable, everyday ring that really packs a punch. And I mean that literally. It would be so cute with a sundress, or even just a tank and jeans. ...

Baby, you look good in wood

I like my mom jewelry like I like my men: wooden, flexible, and hanging from a brass chain. (Ha.) Okay, that came out all wrong. But this unique photo necklace still rocks my socks. The Chunky Old Camera photo necklace by Etsy shop VectorCloud really is everything I love in statement jewelry. It’s unique– or have you seen laser cut Alder wood before? It’s big and chunky and a little bit retro, of course. And you can insert any 1″ photo you want, which means you can go from squishy newborn photos to pudgy toddler smiles to portraits of...

Nice buns!

I can’t help loving these artist-created bunnies made with vintage fabrics from some of our favorite designers. I just want to squeeze them and love them; especially the one with the apples. The vintage bunnies and rag dolls from UK Etsian Jane Foster have faces hand printed on linen, and bodies handmade of vintage Scandinavian fabric from designers like Orla Kiely.  They stand at a rugged fifteen inches, meaning they’re a fantastic, affordable kids’ gift; or a stand-in for the glass rabbit statue in a recreation of the final scene in Jewel of the Nile. The handmade rag dolls...

Kids’ books that take the road less traveled

It’s a Pinkalicious world, but I am not a Pinkalicious girl, and neither is my kid. We’re more into the Cowboy & Octopus thing. Of course there’s nothing wrong with loving the books prominently displayed at big box stores, because, honestly, there’s a good reason they’re popular. But there’s also an underground world of independent kids’ books– forgotten books, rare books, books that march to a different drummer. And now there’s a great and trusted way to find and capture these roguish tomes. It’s called One Potato, and it’s a lovingly run blog with corresponding shop on Amazon. One...

It’s not a necklace, it’s a Necklush

As we move out of scarf season (at last!) I love the stylish blending of scarf and necklace from Necklush, which seems at once futuristic and retro. Kind of like a gypsy space pirate. Although I’m not sure space pirates have accessories like these. These seamless cotton loops can be wron as a scarf-like cowl, as light loops in summer, in a bow-like neckpiece, or as chains, depending on which version you choose. In fact, there are oodles of delicious– or is that de-lush-ious?— Necklush colors and styles up for grabs, and I think they’re just phenomenal with summer’s...

The perfect kids’ nail polish for prima-donnas and eco-mommas alike

I’ve painted more nails in the last two years than in my entire previous life, most of them tiny and slightly nibbled. I used to try to weasel my way out of playing Preschool Esthetician with rants on bad chemicals, but now she’s got me. We’ve found utterly safe nail polish in adorable colors that we both love. Like the Cotton Candy pink on all twenty of our collective toes. If you’ve got a sensitive kid, a nail-biter, brittle nails, problem nails, a baby on the way, or anxiety over fumes, then you might dig Keeki Naturals nail polish too. Their...

Organic baby products – for when only the purest butt spray will do

Why am I a fan of organic baby products? To put it sweetly, sometimes our daintiest parts get the angriest. I really care about the kinds of products that go in those dainty places. Now there’s a new line of super-pure skin softeners from Australia that we think you’ll love, especially if your baby has problems with eczema, cradle cap, dry skin, or diaper rash. Or even if you mamas have skin issues yourselves. Every product from miniOrganics is formulated using the most comprehensive organic standards in the world. That means no GMOs, no pesticide residues, no petrochemicals or...

Surprise! It’s goodies!

Know what once arrived on my doorstep bearing a vintage gold cuff, a flower hair clip, 3 pairs of earrings, a journal, 2 dozen animal-print cupcake liners, and a baggie of carrot-riding-baby cake toppers? It was a Bag O’Goodies from CMP crush Darlybird, and I only paid $16 for the lot. Now you can get one, too. Once again, for just $16, you get a cavalcade of treats totaling at least $45. Each Bag O’Goodies includes a selection of limited edition, one-of-a-kind, and generally super cute stuff ranging from jewelry to vintage ephemera to baking goods and stationery. You...

Shel Silverstein, the next generation

Hi. My name is Delilah, and my preschooler is a poetry addict. From Shel Silverstein to Robert Frost, she’s as likely to drop a tome in my lap as to beg to watch Tangled for the fiftieth time this week. So when I tell you that she loves this book, I mean she sleeps with it under her pillow. It’s called His Shoes Were Far Too Tight, and it’s a loving collaboration between celebrated children’s author Daniel Pinkwater, best-selling poet/artist Calef Brown, and the poetry of a much-missed, roly poly fellow named Edward Lear who believed that a little nonsense...

Our good friends at Revolution Foods have cooked up a new organic taste treat for your kids that combines the health of veggies with the sweetness of fruit. Trust me when I say it’s the best mash-up around– especially since it doesn’t include samples of Kid Rock rapping. [don’t miss a $100 giveaway after the jump!] The new flavors of Organic Mashups Fruit & Veggie Smoothies are so addictively delicious that my kids ate them in two days and still beg for them whenever we see them at the store. They come in easy, no-mess squeeze packets that would...

Mama Mio, I refuse to stop using this mighty moisturizer.

Funny story– I almost didn’t want to feature this (utterly amazing) facial moisturizer. “I don’t think I see a difference,” I said to myself. “I look great, but surely that’s just me.” So I stopped using it. And then I noticed that my face didn’t look as young. My skin didn’t look as radiant. My eyes didn’t look as perky. In short, when I stopped using it, I looked older. So I apologized to it, kissed its feet, and am now using it again. And you should, too. It’s called Mama Mio Mighty Moisture, and it just impressed the...

Touch Mummy’s Alice doll, and I’ll introduce you to the Jabberwocky

I’m such a huge Alice in Wonderland fan that I spent no less than five days trying to come up with just the right title to pay homage to this amazing Etsy find. And I love it so much that threatening my children with imaginary monsters was my final choice. And I stand by it. GIMME THE ALICE DOLL, AND NOBODY GETS HURT BY THE JUB-JUB BIRD. Ahem. So I really like this Alice folk doll set which is one of the many storytime character folk dolls  by Etsy’s Cart Before the Horse, a mom-and-dad business out of Portland,...

The biggest, fuzziest balls we’ve ever seen

Writing about big, fuzzy balls makes me think of that Schweddy Balls sketch on Saturday Night Live. Except these balls aren’t salty and nutty and made by Alec Baldwin. No, they’re gorgeous and made of recycled sweaters or fleece and soft as the dickens. I especially love the giant fleece Zoo ball designed to match Alexander Henry’s popular 2D Zoo fabric– which I had in one of my nurseries, actually. At a bouncy 18″ in diameter, this ball is a striking addition to a room and a wonderful, long-lasting lovey that will take you from infanthood to preschool lounging. ...

May the Fourth be with you on Star Wars Day!

Star Wars fans are nodding sagely at this headline and raising their glasses of blue milk. To the rest of you, maybe you noticed how “May the fourth” sounds like “May the Force?” Yeah. All it takes is one fabulous pun, and we Star Wars geeks see an opportunity for a full-on Boba Fete every time May 4 rolls around. And because you know that several of the Cool Mom contributors are–ahem–full time geeks, we bring you this round-up of some of our favorite Star Wars picks from Cool Mom Picks and Cool Mom Tech. Pretty Wicket, huh? First...

The dream room that dream rooms dream about

I still remember when my mom painted a mural in my room. I was five, and it was a 70’s-style jungle scene. I got to help. Seven years later, I took up the muralist’s brush myself and even helped pay my rent in college by whipping up Snoopy nurseries and flower gardens and my own, 90’s style jungles. Sadly, painted murals have mostly been replaced with those clever stick-on decals, which are cheaper and easier to switch out when princesses are out and owls are in. But we’ve found a muralist taking kids’ rooms to the next level– and...

The beauty of Blissoma (or, how I learned to stop frying my skin and love the vitamins)

Sometimes, I feel like my face is a battlefield. Since that first, confusing teen pimple, I’ve tried everything from earth mama oil cleansing, to whatever Glamour told me to use, to a more…. well, scorched earth policy of serious prescription retinoids that made me peel like a lizard. Ouch. But for the first time, I’ve found something that makes my face feel blissful. Which makes sense, since “bliss” is right there in the name: Blissoma. [don’t miss a great offer after the jump!] The line of Blissoma skincare from Irie Star is an award-winning collection of 100% natural and...

Damn Fine Tea – My haven from the squalls of motherhood

For over 2000 years at least, civilizations rose and fell, wars were won and lost– all for tea. And now, it’s a just another rack of brightly colored, shrink-wrapped boxes at the supermarket. That’s a damn shame. But Damn Fine Tea is trying to bring tea back where it belongs: to the realm of obsession. Instead of buying tea in impersonal little bags and gulping it down before the kids need us and it goes cold, the makers of Damn Fine Tea want us to savor every step of the tea ritual. Their packaging is clever and beautiful. The directions are...

He’s made with 8oz. of solid white chocolate and comes complete with exposed ribs, blood spatters, a queasy green patina, and one seriously crazy, edible zombie eye. The good news? We’re pretty sure he...
