Our neighborhood pool opens at the end of this week (whoo!), so I’m busy tracking down stylish, swim trunks for my son that will last us all summer long. While last week we found some great swimsuits for girls, for those of you with a boy like me, here are some of my favorite boys’ swim picks for the upcoming pool days and beach trips in your near future.
We’re big fans of the quality and fit of the Red21Boys’ swim trunks. I’m digging the Jack Thomas plaid for your preppy son, especially since he could just toss on t-shirt on and wear them out and about too.
I’ve always liked Appaman’s classic swim shorts, but now they’re offering them in bold colors, like this fabulous colorblock style. A nice change from busy patterns if that’s more your style.
I’ve been impressed with skater Shaun White’s line at Target, and the Shaun White swim trunks are no exception. Especially if you’re looking for less cutesie options for your older boys. And at this price, you can grab a couple different styles to rotate through their summer wardrobe.
For a splurge, the Terry Rich board shorts are fantastic choice. I was super impressed with the quality and worksmanship of their terry cloth robes, so it’s no surprise that their boys’ shorts, which are designed and made in Australia, are amazing.
If you’ve got a son obsessed with Marvel characters, the Junk Food swimwear line at Gap is a fantastic compromise to take home a few licensed characters, without feeling like he’s a walking advertisement. You almost wouldn’t notice Spidey was hiding there.
I was thrilled to discover Australian-based Tom & Teddy, especially now that they’ve arrived here in the U.S. Aren’t the octopus swim trunks adorable? And a shorter length if you dig that style.
I have to admit that I often forget to check Hanna Andersson for boys’ clothing, but given how well their girls’ styles hold up, I need to remember to shop there for my son more often. While some of their swim trunks for boys are a little too sweet for my taste, I really like the Navy and White stripes, which are not only right on trend this year, but also UPF 50+ for extra sun protection.

Thanks so much for this guide. I am sending my boy to a summer camp that requires that he wear his swim trunks most of the day, and I wasn’t really happy with the two pairs he had. Purchased the Red21 trunks and some Gap trunks that he will love–he is crazy for plaid/madras and lots of bright colors.
