In my now six year tenure as a parent, I’ve learned you should never say never. Because there’s a good chance, especially if you have more than one kid, that your never will come back to bite you in the butt.
So while I can say with confidence that I will never purchase a wipes warmer, since using the new Philips Avent digital video baby monitor, I’m now eating a few of my words about video baby monitors.
To be fair, this cool monitor is much different than some of the
heftier models I’ve seen (and admittedly, joked about), thanks to
awesome technology and convenient portability. So instead of being
stuck staring at a big blurry screen in one room of your house, you
just plug the sleek camera near your baby’s crib, then take
the super clear digital screen with you wherever you go.
It features
both day and night vision, along with a music button that allows you to
pop on a few tunes (albeit electronic-sounding ones that you may not love) for your restless
kiddo.
As someone with children who will often cry for a few
minutes or rustle around for upwards of a half-hour before going back to sleep, having the video monitor
has saved me from that stress of wondering whether I should go in — and then doing so only to wake
them up.
Hands down, Philips’ handy new video baby monitor is well worth the price. And the humble pie I’m
eating. -Kristen

Nice!
We loved our video monitor, too, mainly so we could oooh and ahhhh over our baby girl while she slumbered peacefully. It was also amusing to turn on the monitor to see her big ol’ nightvision eyes looking back at us. I’m sure we’ll bust it out again when it’s time to transition her out of her crib.
A lot of our friends laughed at us for getting a video monitor. Then they saw it in use and went…. “oh. You know, that is kind of useful!” for exactly the reason you said… you know when you do need to go in (foot’s stuck through the bars, soothers have been pitched on the floor) and when you don’t (kid’s just rolling around trying to put herself to sleep). It was also super useful to me as a first time mom to reassure me that all was fine. If you zoom in you can in fact see that yes, the baby is breathing. π
It is getting more and more useful as she gets older. I’m hoping my baby won’t notice the camera in her room when she’s 16. π
Although i’d be hesitant to spend the cash, I love the idea of video monitors…just for entertainment sake. There have been plenty of nights I wished I could have been a fly on the wall watching my son play in his crib and seeing what actions are going along with all those cute cooing sounds.
We don’t have this one but we love our video monitor and have used it since we put our son in a separate room at four or five months. We actually also have an audio only monitor and that’s the one we keep on all the time. The video monitor
is for checking to see if he’s fallen asleep or, now that he’s a toddler, to see if he’s actually ready to get up or is still
happily lolling around in his crib. Of course it’s also great for seeing how cute he looks while sleeping just before I go to bed myself!
On the advice of some friends, we purchased a digital home surveillance system. It costs the same (or less!!) than most baby video monitors, with ALL the same features. Two bonuses: you can purchase additional cameras to put around the house (like baby’s play area), and because it’s digital, there is no interference. We love it!
Total waste of money! We never used one, heck we barely used the regular monitors you can listen in on. I know it sounds like a good idea, but skip it!
I was doubtful, but now that we’ve been using ours (not this model) for the past 3 years, it’s indispensable to me. I love that we can take pictures or record video, so I can always go back and see my sleeping baby, even when he’s 40. π
As parents our #1 main priority is to make certain that our children are safe and secure at all times and baby monitors are a great way for new or expecting parents to relieve a little stress knowing that their baby is safe. Regardless of how some parents believe that baby monitors are not necessary, I am a firm believer that if I am able to reduce the risk associated with the safety of my child then it is money well spent and I can sleep a little easier.
