It can be a struggle to get kids to remember to wear their helmets, but when their bike safety gear looks as good as these cool bike helmets for kids–they’re much more likely to use one. So since it’s July, and in our house the Tour de France is on TV every morning (meaning between stages, my own little cyclists are out on the driveway doing their own time trials) we’ve put together our favorite bike helmets for your kids. Because I’ve seen the falls in the race, and I want to be sure my kids are really safe when they’re out on our street riding like the yellow jersey is on the line.
The helmets that look like hats from Yakkay (also at top) are for kids who don’t want to lose their fashion sense while they’re out riding. Plus, the “hat” cover is removable if they want to change up their look after a while, which means mom can make it last a lot longer. Yay.
The Bern skate-inspired helmets aren’t just for skateboarding. They’re also great for biking,or speeding down the hill in the back yard in a wheelbarrow, while parents white knuckle the camera phone.
When you find your kids peeling all the princess or superhero stickers off their bike, it’s time to move them up to a Nutcase helmet. These are hip, modern designs for younger kids who want bright fun colors and more sophisticated, trendy styling without any signs of Dora. Perfect for first bikes and mini scooters.
Look like you’re part of the peloton with the Giro’s traditional bike helmet shapes. I’m really loving this year’s trend of matte finishes, and the camo helmet is no exception.
The Uvex Hero helmet is known for its exceptional safety features, like LED reflectors and a dial adjust fitting mechanism, so toddlers can adjust the helmet themselves for the perfect fit. That’s a big deal as we know, when kids hit the “I can do it myself!” phase.
If you’ve got a girly girl who also likes to hit the pedals, you can dress up her helmet with this One Two Three Speed bow with a reflective strip on it. A sneaky way to turn a fashion statement into a true safety feature.

Both Nutcase and Bern helmets have received very poor safety ratings. While the helmets are cute, they are definitely not the best safety choice for kids. It would be helpful if the article included some better choices.

Thanks so much for this comment Brandi. Here’s an article about the Consumer Reports testing you may be referring to. The comments are especially interesting. We’ll try to get more info for you. -Eds
