This week’s outrage du jour is brought to you by football star James Harrison and his now controversial Instagram photo in which he threatened to take away his kids’ participation trophies. So of course we tackle (puns! puns!) this controversial stance on today’s SPAWNED with Kristen and Liz.
Also, you’ve got to hear which trophy Liz really wants on her mantle.
You can also subscribe to Spawned on iTunes and listen in the Podcast app that comes totally free with your iOS device. Have you left us a review or rating yet? Please do! It helps other people find our podcast, and well, it just makes us happy.

Should every kid get a trophy?
Here’s James Harrison’s controversial Instagram post about rewarding participation, not winners.
We both actually talked about this topic a loooong time ago on our personal blogs. Kristen actually kept her son home from his baseball team dinner to avoid the participation trophy (that she had to pay for!). Liz just told her readers that your child is not special. (Actually, she talked about David McCullough’s viral high school commencement speech; not her own readers.)
On Dad2Summit, Whit Honea says children shouldn’t return the participation trophies, which he also discussed in a piece over on CNN by Kelly Wallace, along with Ashley Merryman, Hilary Levey Friedman, and Mark Hyman.
Video of Liz and Ashley talking to Katie Couric about overpraising children and other parenting issues.
Ashley Merryman’s must-read New York Times essay: Losing is good for you.
Liz’s Cool Pick of the Week: Reusable coffee cups that sparked a ton of conversation on our Facebook page.
Kristen’s Cool Pick of the Week: Accessories for fall that look good and do even more good.
