Yesterday, Cool Mom Picks editor-in-chief and publisher Liz Gumbinner joined NurtureShock co-author Ashley Merryman to talk with Katie Couric about some of today’s hot parenting topics on Katie’s excellent CBS News webshow, @katiecouric. If you haven’t had a chance to check out the video yet, we’ve got it right here.
Liz and Ashley discuss how we handle tough topics like racial differences and bullying, along with the trends of overpraising kids, bolstering self-esteem, minimizing competition, and how these affect the way our kids view themselves and the world. Such an awesome discussion of parenting strategies and insights.
And the answer, according to Liz is, “Yes, Katie is awesome in person. One more cool mom in the world.” Why are we not surprised?

Very cool, Liz! I’m a big Katie fan.
I watched it this morning and it was such a great discussion of what I fear about most in my parenting. I am a late 30s/40s mom of preschoolers and am fairly laid back and confident in my skills. However, so much of what I see from other parents is so opposite of what I consider effective parenting I constantly second guess myself. Liz & Ashley put me right back into my comfort zone that what I feel in my gut is right for my kids is what they need. Excellent discussion on how to effectively praise the effort and not the result. Also interesting segment on ‘entitlement’ attitudes.
Thanks Liz & Ashley!
Love it Liz. You go.
