Each year, Black History Month is a wonderful time for Americans to celebrate the historical achievements and contributions of Black people in this country. But I dream of a time that these achievements will be given equal representation in our history books and celebrated all year long. That’s why I really love the Urban Intellectuals Black History Flashcards, which we’ve been eagerly awaiting for a while now.
And now they’re shipping!
Each of the two decks share 52 untold stories and achievements of Black Americans here and around the world, including important contributions in education, science, civil rights, business, the arts.
There are topics and bios of African-American pioneers you’ll know, like President Barack Obama, The Montgomery Bus Boycott, and Bessie Coleman. And many, many figures you and your kids will be excited to learn about such as Henrietta Lacks, Jomo Kenyatta, and Carter G. Woodson.
What’s really special though is that Black History Flashcards Vol 2 is dedicated entirely to celebrating the achievements of Black women. I’m pretty excited about that one!
While they’re presented as flashcards to support reading and other learning in school and at home, personally, I’d love to see the Black History Flashcards sold in smaller decks as collectible trading cards, too.
I want my biracial daughters to view these trailblazers as heroes, not trivia question answers. I mean wouldn’t it be amazing if our children were as excited at finding a Katherine Johnson card as a rare Pokemon card? Or if they were as thrilled about getting a James Baldwin card as a favorite ballplayers.
The more we celebrate all of our nation’s pioneers, especially those who are seldom represented, the closer we get to a telling of history that inspires all of our children.
You can order Black History Flashcards at Urban Intellectual’s online shop for $14.99 a deck (on sale while the sale lasts!) or order in bulk of 10 or 20 decks, perfect for classrooms. They start shipping this week!
