This Earth Month happened to be the perfect time for us to stumble on Skout Organic, as a lot of us are thinking about how to get more plant-based foods into our family’s bellies. So why not start with the lunch box?

We recently tried the certified organic, plant-based snack bars from Skout Organic, and we’re happy to find a truly delicious alternative to the highly processed, very artificial snack bars that line our supermarket shelves. Strawberry Jam and Chocolate Peanut Butter are excellent — and among the most popular if you want a place to start, but YMMV.

Here’s what else to know.

Skout Organic natural snack bars are a great alternative for kids: Organic, vegan, gluten-free, and delicious

Skout Organic bars are not only plant-based (as in, vegan) and certified organic, but they’re all carefully tested to be free of soy, dairy, wheat/gluten, and eggs. There are lots of nut-free options as well. Kids will be psyched about favorite flavors like Apple Pie, Raspberry Rush, and Blueberry Blast, but we think their eyes will widen with more indulgent-sounding flavors like Chocolate Hazelnut, Cookie Dough, French Toast, and PB&J.

Skout Organic snack bars are not sugar-free if that’s a concern, but they are sweetened naturally with organic dates, which accounts for the fruit bar texture. A small number of bars do use coconut sugar or maple syrup as sweeteners, but no stevia or sugar alcohol, which a lot of parents want to avoid in their kids’ snacks.

If you’re looking for more of a protein bar, they do have a 3-ingredient Peanut Butter Protein Bar (it’s sweetened with dates and balanced with Himalayan sea salt), which delivers 10g of protein for kids on the go. We haven’t tried it but it gets great reviews.

The best bet is to try one of their variety packs and sample 15 flavors. Or if your kids have particular preferences or food sensitivities, they have a smart build-a-box that lets you customize your snack bar box with only flavors your kids like, or focus on categories like “dessert-inspired” or “nut-free.”
