Saving lives with soap. Yes, soap.

Hand-washing is big in our house, especially after that last bout of stomach flu, which has cured my son forever of licking the bathroom floor at Michael’s. (I kid. Mostly.) It’s easy to take something as simple as a bar of soap for granted, considering there’s an opportunity to wash off dirt and germs at every public and personal sink around our suburb. But not everyone is so lucky, and we’ve found a company dedicated to changing the world through soap. And you know what? It’s really nice soap, too. Organic and everything! SoapBox Soaps is the brainchild of...

Mad Men is back! And so is Mad Men style

Has anticipation overwhelmed you yet?  Are you ready  for the new season premiere of Mad Men tonight?  We can’t get enough petticoats, pencil skirts, Jackie O scarves and cat-eye sunglasses. (To say nothing of the actual storylines. Promise, we’re not just watching for the wardrobe!) To celebrate the series that’s taken fashion by storm this season, I have found a few Mad Men inspired items that are fresh and modern for spring and summer of 2012–but don’t make you look like you’re wearing a costume. Or a pointy bra. This flattering striped dress from ModCloth has a slightly pleated...

Easter eggs almost as natural as the ones that come out of a chicken

Every year, I try to find more eco-friendly alternatives to the ubiquitous plastic Easter eggs. And while I have seen reusable wood eggs and lovely handmade felt ones to fill, they can be pricey if you have to buy more than a few. This year, though, there is finally a real alternative that look just like those plastic eggs, but have a secret ingredient: Corn. Made here in the USA and started by candy-company owner and mama of two, Christine Lantinen, eco eggs look just like those plastic eggs we’ve hidden in the grass, bushes and trees for years. Only these...

Electric Mayhem Band touring posters. 1975 was a very good year.

With so many kids having rediscovered Muppet Mania with the release of the new Muppet Movie this past year, it’s not surprising that everyone’s  favorite Henson creations are making a big pop culture comeback. Our latest discovery–Michalel dePippo’s awesome vintage style silkscreen prints. These vintage Muppet posters take on the Electric Mayhem band’s “1975 tour” in a very adult way, but one that kids will still get a kick out of. They’re limited edition silkscreens in editions of just 250, so of course Dr. Teeth,  Animal and Zoot Sax are sold out (wah!) but I’m holding out hope that...

3 clever new mom gear essentials from Munchkin

With two kids under four in our household, we are huge fans of Munchkin. From eating essentials to bath time fun, they’ve hooked a lot of mamas up over the years. So I was psyched to get a sneak peak at their new lineup, only to discover three really helpful, innovative new Munchkin items for feeding, sleeping and potty training just out this year. Click Lock Sippy Cup Leaking sippy cups are the bane of my existence. There’s nothing worse than finding water or juice spilled all over the inside of your diaper bag–I’ve even had to replace a...

The Hunger Games is coming. Bring the baby!

I remember the early baby days, when finding the time to see a big release movie like Hunger Games was even less likely than or showering regularly. Just getting out of the house seemed so exotic, and often too daunting.  I wish we had the new Bring Your Baby Matinees back then.    Just launched by TheBump.com and AMC Theaters around the country, Bring Your Baby is a screening specifically designed for movie-hungry parents and of course, their babies. Park your stroller with the “valet” and grab a seat for a grown-up movie in an actual theater. If your baby makes normal...

Gift for nine-month-old boy who has everything? Reader Q&A

Any fab gift ideas for 9 month old boy who has everything? – Alysia, via Twitter If you’re about to visit a little one who has “everything” (a slightly daunting proposition when he’s not even a year old!) I like giving toys that can be both a plaything and something lovely to display on a dresser, bookshelf or chair. Especially ones that are handmade. This way, it’s got a more keepsake feel to it, and it’s not just another plastic thing to toss into the toy bin (or step on at night). –Christina Unless his name is Mahershalalhashbaz”, the...

Science rocks in Wallace & Gromit’s World of Invention

Long before I had children, I fell in love with the clay stop-motion characters of nerdy inventor Wallace and his lovable dog Gromit. And now that I’ve succeeded in bringing three more over to Wallace & Gromit fandom, I’ve found a fun little series that couples our love of these characters with stories about the coolest-of-the-cool inventions from around the world to get kids excited about science. Six episodes of Wallace & Gromit’s World of Invention have been neatly packaged for us here in the states since we didn’t catch them when they originally aired on the BBC1. Wallace, the...

Eye-tricking handbags now for less. (No trick!)

I remember when I first linked to the amazing cartoonish-looking handbags from Taiwan’s Jump for Paper, I spent a lot of minutes trying to convince my brain that these were indeed handbags and not flat pictures.  Created by designers Chay Su and Rika Lin, JumpFromPaper get its distinctive look from cartoon-like outlines and bright color accents that make the bag look like it was ripped out of a comic book. I half expect to see cartoon bubble “WOW”‘s popping up as I walk down the street. Made from polyester, not cardboard, these bags can be wiped clean with a...

April showers bring a good excuse to shop online for Hunter boots and bags. Yes, bags!

I love my Hunter rain boots. Unfortunately, I live in LA where it almost never rains, even as the rest of the country wades through those upcoming April showers. Okay, I lie; It drizzles, sometimes. And that’s when I climb into my fabulously green Hunters and I rock them all day long…even when the sun comes back out. But you may not know Hunter makes more than boots. [don’t miss some of their most gorgeous spring items after the jump] In addition to those signature boots, the Hunter collection also includes cute sandals, bright clogs, trenchcoats, and a fantastic...

Fly the friendly skies

It’s officially spring, hooray! And while I’ve got a slew of spring and summer play clothes ready for my son, I always find that scoring a cool dressier option to be a challenge. If you’re in the same boat as me, moms of boys, you’ll want to check out Muny. You don’t need to have a pilot for a husband like I do to be smitten with the boys’ airplane shirt which is available in three color schemes in sizes 1-4. The handblocked print is cute without being cutesy, and the super light, comfy cotton has enough structure to...

The new Discover Natural Samples program is simply brilliant, especially if you’re like me and love to be able to try new lesser known products in small amounts before purchasing them. A mug of one’s own

As my kids get older we are (gasp) transitioning away from the non-breakable plastic wear and gingerly setting down proper plates and drinkware at their table settings. They still have their personalized placemats so it’s not like I’m turning them into little adults, and in fact we’re not quite out of the HOW COME SHE GOT THE BLUE PRINCESS CUP? I WANT THE BLUE PRINCESS CUP! stage. So what a genius solution these tumblers are. The espresso mugs from Pigeon Toe Ceramics all look beautifully uniform on the outside–but turn over the bottom and a colorful painted bottom reveals...

What do Ron Burgundy, Yoda, and Pee Wee have in common?

There’s something to be said for small children looking adorable wearing characters on their chests, and yet having no earthly idea who they are. We’re smitten with the Micielomicielo shop on Etsy, where pop culture icons are transformed into adorable eco-felt and screenprinted designs applied to handmade bodysuits and t-shirts for kids and adults. Their Star Wars designs go beyond the main characters– because they have 17 different choices. That’s so awesome, I just “felt” a tremor in the Force! Other options include Mr. T, badgers, Spock, Totoro, Hello Kitty, Sesame Street, Muppets, and Transformers. Speaking of Ron Burgundy,...
