Free printables + activities that help grow kids’ hearts 3 sizes this Grinch-mas

Maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more. We read that line in Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas every year, but it can sometimes be difficult to drive home the message with kids who are a bit more focused on their shiny, wrapped presents. (Not that we blame them entirely.) Related: Deck the house with the coolest Christmas printables, lots of them free If you want to find the strength of 10 Grinches plus two this holiday season — and mobilize your kids to do good in the community...

The 2016 National Spelling Bee winners. And tips for getting your kids excited about spelling.

The 2016 National Scripps Spelling Bee finals ended last night and just wow. For the third year running, two amazing kids tied as winners: 13 year old Jairam Pathwar of Upstate NY, and Austin Texas’ Nihar Janga who is only 11. Wow. To clinch the number-one slot from among 285 contestants, Jairam and Nihar persevered through words like juamave, Biniou and zindiq, finally closing the deal with winning words gesellschaft (Nihar) and Feldenkrais (Jairam). All I can think of is that Rosenkrantz and Feldenkrais are Dead, but I know that’s not right. (Turns out it’s a method of education, like Waldorf or Montessori — two words I actually can...

There’s more to kids’ movies than Disney and Marvel: Top picks from the NY International Children’s Film Festival

This weekend kicks off the NYICFF, or the NY International Children’s Film Festival, which has become one of our favorite annual traditions. We are definitely a movie-loving household, and work hard to find the good stuff.  (Multiple viewings of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic not withstanding.) Which means there are times we spend more time scrolling through Netflix looking for trying to agree on something decent, than watching the actual film. For those of you nodding vigorously right now — or just want something, anything besides the latest shoot-em-up superhero flick or insipid animated franchise — take a look at some of this...

22 National Parks and Sites you can visit without hiking boots. Maybe even without a plane ticket.

This is a sponsored post on behalf of the National Parks Service and the Amex EveryDay Credit Card which helps you make the most out of…#EveryDayMoments. (You guessed it.)     When I think of the US National Parks, my mind tends to go right to places like Niagra Falls, Yosemite, The Grand Canyon, and Yellowstone Park. (Or Jellystone, if you grew up watching Yogi Bear.) The crazy thing is, living in New York City, I realize there is so much amazing stuff right here, or just a short drive away. I mean, Ellis Island and Liberty Island — I see them looking southwest from my Brooklyn neighborhood...

The Breakfast Club is coming back to theaters! Brains, athletes, basket cases, and princesses all welcome.

We’re fist-pumping, Bender style, over the rerelease of John Hughes’ arguably best movie ever (sorry, Home Alone), The Breakfast Club.  Say it with us: Could you describe the ruckus, sir? In honor of the 30th anniversary of the film that made every girl question whether she was a Claire or an Allison–although we all tried the lipstick trick, admit it–The Breakfast Club is showing in select theaters across the US on March 26 and 31. And despite being oh, just a little bit older than when it first came out (it was my own first R-rated movie) I am so going to be...

Baby Loves Disco turns 10! Which kind of makes it Tween Loves Disco, huh?

I’ve been a huge fan (and friend) of Baby Loves Disco ever since I shook my groove thing at my first dance party with them back in 2006. Well, they’re turning ten this year (10!), and they’ve got a slew of cool dance parties all around the country to celebrate. They’ll be touring the U.S. all fall (starting with Baltimore tomorrow!) with fun events where you and your kids can cut a rug, get down, or do whatever it is that you love to do on the actual dance floor of a hip club–cool music included, although there’s no shortage of other...

Want to meet Anna Quindlen? Well guess what…

One of my literary heroes has always been Anna Quindlen. She’s not only an amazing columnist, Pulitzer Prize winning  journalist, hard working mom, and now incredible author, she’s an all-around very cool, very inspiring woman. Next Tuesday in NYC, I’ll be hosting a reading and signing for her new book, Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake which is a warm, humorous take on motherhood, marriage, girlfriends, our bodies–ya know. All the stuff we’re talking about anyway. Only she’ll say it better. Which is why you’ll want to buy it, then have it signed. If you’re in the NYC area,...

I’m so excited to be speaking on a panel this spring at the third annual Kindiefest, the conference for all that’s cool in family music (or as we affectionately call it, kindie rock). In other words, the kinds of CD reviews you see on these here pages each week, thanks in part to our indie music-savvy associate editor Christina. While the conference itself is definitely for those in the industry (and hooray for a keynote from Dan Zanes!) on Sunday May 2 there will be a phenomenal concert that’s open to all. Or at least all of you in...

Arthur Ashe Kids Day at the US Open – Definitely not just for kids.

I have such fond memories of scoring US Open tickets a kid, roaming the grounds, and sitting slack-jawed in awe of all the incredible talent. (This was the McEnroe days. I’m that old. ) But back then, they didn’t have anything like the annual Arthur Ashe Kids Day, which is coming up this Saturday. If you’re lucky enough to be in the NY area, it’s totally worth a trip. In addition to getting to watch amazing athletes like Serena Williams, and Maria Sharipova (which honestly, would be enough), there’s an entire 2 hour big deal kind of stadium show,...
