If like me, you fell in love with the art of animation all over again after losing yourself in the artistry of releases like The Book of Life, The Boxtrolls, and the totally-robbed-by-the-award-show-establishment LEGO Movie, then listen up: The NY International Children’s Film Festival is coming!
(Yes, I am a total animation geek. Let’s talk Bill Plympton sometime.)

Looking at the terrific lineup, I was immediately excited about the North American premiere of When Marnie Was There (above). This is the latest offering from Studio Ghibli, directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi who brought us the wonderful The Secret World of Arriety. But alas, I think my seven-year-old would struggle with the subtitles, especially considering the premiere starts at 8:30 PM, so fortunately we found some other fantastic options with tickets available.
For variety’s sake, take a look at the two international short film programs that let us discover new talents like Anatole’s Little Saucepan from France, above, and Czech animator Alexandra Hetmerova’s Mythopolis. That’s the one my mythology-loving kids are so excited for. Who can resist a story in which Medusa is a modern day mom having a relationship with the Cyclops delivery man?
If you prefer the familiarity of a studio like Aardman Animation, there’s a retrospective of their best shorts over the past four decades, like Creature Comforts and Humdrum that I’m sure will sell out quickly. And hey, there are even live action films for kids too.
If you’re going to be in and around NYC in the coming weeks, set aside a few hours on a weekend afternoon and grab some tickets of your own. It’s always so wonderful to find cool cultural events like this designed just for kids, and I love supporting them with the hopes there will be even more.
Grab tickets now for the NY International Children’s Film Festival premiering February 27 and running through March 22 at 5 different venues around the City. There are showings for kids 3 and up, and you can sort by date, age, venue, or film style.
We also have this special code which will offer $2 discount on each ticket if you want to offer it to your readers.
Exclusive: Get $2 off each ticket. Visit gkids.com/fest2015, select your desired screening, enter the code CMP15, and enjoy the show!
