Breaking news: Trader Joe’s and Sunland peanut butter recall expands *Now updated

NOTE: It appears that Sunland Inc is now out of business. Check your pantries, mamas! The recall of New Mexico-based Sunland Inc. peanut butter sold at Trader Joe’s has now been expanded to 76 types of products, including almond butter, cashew butter, and tahini. The original recall was for Trader Joe’s Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter due to numerous salmonella illnesses across 18 states, however, additional products that are made on the same equipment by Sunland Inc. have now also been voluntarily recalled, including Archer Farms (sold at Target) and Harry & David. The good news is that none...

A DIY kids’ craft to brighten up fall

I know it’s just a matter of time. Soon, my kids will be bringing home school craft projects made with fading leaves, twigs and pinecones. But I refuse to abandon the bright, bold colors I love just because we’ve officially hit fall. That’s why I love this supersimple DIY kids’ craft that even I can pull off. This craft tutorial for bright paper ornaments takes nothing more than paper, scissors, glue, and some string for hanging. Think snowflakes, only round. Considering how excited my five-year-old gets about wielding her own scissors these days, a project like this will be a...

Nursing for good: The Bravado Nursing Tank by Rebecca Minkoff for Baby Buggy

I love good products that help support a good cause, but I love them even more when they’re actually tied to the cause. (As in, I still question that strange fast-food fried-chicken campaign to fight breast cancer.) This is why I’m so happy to give you the first look at a beautiful new designer nursing tank by Rebecca Minkoff, to benefit one of my very favorite charities, Baby Buggy. The Bravado Designs Essential Nursing Tanks by Rebecca Minkoff  are worth a look just knowing this awesome designer is partnering with one of moms’ all-time most-loved nursing bra brands. There...

Rabbit Days and Dumplings serves up deliciously different family music

Thanks to an Austrian grandmother and a healthy selection of Putumayo Kids music, my kids have been exposed to a fairly diverse tapestry of children’s music…although I will admit that our knowledge of any music from East Asia is almost nonexistent. But now that versatile musician Elena Moon Park from Dan Zanes and Friends has released a collection of songs from her homeland, that’s all about to change. {Keep reading for a chance to win a copy of this CD!} Rabbit Days and Dumplings is especially exciting if you’re like me and have a preconceived notion in your head of what an...

Aubrey Anderson-Emmon’s Emmy dress: will it be your daughter’s dress next?

And we’ve got a first-hand look at how it came together (zomg, the picture of Aubrey with her dad is killing us) and…an exclusive chance to win one of your own. [don’t miss a chance to win your own dress after the jump!] Knowing my own girls, I can only imagine that it’s every 5 year-old’s dream to have a...

Watch it wiggle, see it freak out your party guests

Browsing through our archives for cool Halloween ideas, I came across this old link to a post highlighting a recipe for super spooky eyeball Jell-O shots. Non-alcoholic for the kids, of course. Poking around the site, turns out there’s a ton more great ideas for any upcoming Halloween parties you might have on the calendar. At Jelly Shot Test Kitchen, the updates are now few and far between but the recipe archive is still quite good. Do some searching and you’ll find recipes like Candy Corn Jello and Polyjuice Potion made with gingerale, pineapple and lime, and topped with gummy worms....

Volcom, Yo Gabba Gabba and Jack Black = skate culture awesomesauce

Volcom is my kids’ absolute obsession around these parts. They’re hardcore skateboarders, and Volcom represents everything that is awesome about skater culture. One of my sons insists on only wearing shirts emblazoned with their logo. He has two, and if they’re dirty? No worries. He will gladly dig them out of the laundry basket. Talk about brand loyalty at six years old!  And now Volcom’s newest collaboration is the raddest thing since sliced bread, because they have figured out a way to raise the roof on cool. Intrigued? Oh, you should be. Volcom and Yo Gabba Gabba have joined...

Show Me a Story: low on tech, high on terrific

When my kids were really young, they loved to tell me long, adorably nonsensical stories about just about anything that crossed their minds. Now that they’re a bit older, I miss their elaborate tales. These days, it’s easy for tech-savvy kids to lose themselves in their electronic games and gadgets. But guess what? Armed with a new book packed with loads of interactive tips, crafts, and games, I’ve found a fun way to engage their imagination and encourage old-school play and storytelling, all over again. {Keep reading to learn how you can win a copy!} The beautifully designed magazine-style...

Bowled over: vintage bowling lanes get new life as kids’ furniture

Every now and then I spot kids’ furniture that makes me wish I had a little expendable income, and that’s exactly how I feel about these amazing pieces from CounterEvolution.  Table Tots are quite possibly the coolest kids’ table sets I’ve ever seen. And “cool” doesn’t even cover it. This is heirloom-quality furniture with an amazing story worth telling for generations to come. Each set is completely handcrafted from recycled wood and steel rescued from closed-down bowling lanes and other buildings scheduled to be demolished, then finished using green-friendly practices. Fab.  And if the artistry looks familiar, it’s because designer Jim...

Stylish threads for on-trend little guys

Moms of boys, you know it can be a full-on hunt to find cool threads for our little guys. Especially if, like mine, your son happens to love fashion.  So when I discovered Aven Clothing, I actually squealed with happiness. Aven founders Angie Monson and Mitch Harris have created an all-boys clothing line that is wonderfully stylish. The line includes blazers, pullovers, chinos and the cutest cropped vest, all with an edgy European flair. This definitely isn’t your average jeans and t-shirt line, though you will find lots of denim (and even a cool hoodie).                                         ...

Beautiful birth announcements that are a cut above

I spent a lot of time looking for the “perfect” birth announcements for my three children–something unique and beautiful, and worthy of tucking away in a special place and not immediately hitting the recycle bin (gasp!). And if CMP favorite Minted had been around in the early 2000s when I was having these kids, I’m sure I would’ve been all over their brand new, indie-design birth announcements. Gorgeous!    With its eight new shapes (yes, shapes), Minted now offers numerous options for its birth announcements. In other words, good luck to you new parents, because in addition to settling on a...

6 of the best funny parenting books. Because what new moms really need is a new laugh.

Along with a housecleaner and a personal chef, what I really could’ve used when I was a new mom was a good laugh and a lot more funny parenting books. Because while I sat and rocked my newborn as she screamed, it was sometimes hard to not take it all so seriously. If your new-mom friend is not the type to devour the very serious “expert” books on parenting, instead get her one that’s guaranteed to put a smile on her face. Plus, tucked inside all the “funny” is plenty of sage advice that will give any new parent...
