Gorgeous accessories we bet no one else will have

One of the many things I love about online shopping is that you can find all sorts of cool hidden gems in faraway places without having to actually go there. And that’s exactly what happened when I stumbled upon The Little Drom Store. Now, if you happen to be in Singapore, you can pop into their storefront, but if you’re like me, you’ll be shopping from their online shop, which is full of gorgeous, unique baubles. I’m completely smitten with these fabulous knitwear necklaces (though they’re not actually made of knit). What a cool style statement over a white...

Gorgeous, fashion-forward accessories straight from…Tibet

I’ve loved Shokay since I first discovered their gorgeous baby clothes and gifts, all made from a yak hair cashmere that’s unbelievably soft and gorgeous, and all made sustainably to support Tibetan artisans. Now they’ve redone the site and made the leap into a lot of great fashion-forward accessories. I love the Turkana necklace, which is all knit out of bamboo, cotton and yak hair. (And yes, I wish there were a sexier term for “yak hair,” the way we don’t call cashmere “goat hair.”) There are also some spectacular shawls and scarves, like the spring/summer-weight black and white...

Wardrobe brought to you by Judy Blume and Richard Wright.

I like shirts that kids and adults show we’re smarter than we are sassy–not that a little sass is so bad. The kids tees from Out of Print Clothing featuring classic book jacket art are a fave; we own Origin of the Species which my daughter picked because of “all the pretty animals” and I can hardly blame her. Now there are some new designs for adults including one in particular just for us children of the 70’s and the 80’s.   I seriously cannot believe that this Superfudge kids tee is old enough to be called classic, but...

Visit the Marimekko sale for truly amazing deals on all kinds of great things from housewares, tech, kids clothes and even stylish goodies for you. In a past life, these sunglasses could do a mean Ollie

I love upcycled art and design, but more so when the designs are so fantastic, you’d like them even if you didn’t know a thing about their past lives. And in this case, that past life was a little dangerous, a little edgy, and had nothing to do with UV protection. Update 2015: The shop is no longer making sunglasses but they are making very cool handmade watches! The family run Ontario shop, Second Shot, was born from a passion for skateboarding, art, eco-mindfulnes and well, cool stuff. In a collaboration with BotanyCo Eyewear they’ve created an awesome line...

I hardly need an excuse to shop for new jewelry or handbags, but hey, when they support an amazing cause, I have to buy them, right? Here are a ton I’m coveting for more reasons than one. The Rebecca Minkoff tastemaker series honors cool moms. And Cool Mom Picks!

We love prolific designer and mom Rebecca Minkoff. Love! Liz is still coveting her black and white tote and Kristen continues to drool over her mint crossbody bag. So we are beyond honored (seriously) to find ourselves interviewed this week on her excellent, style-savvy blog. Click over to her TasteMaker Series and learn a little bit about our Mother’s Day plans, beauty essentials, must-have apps, and of course our favorite RM products on our Mother’s Day wishlists. Which is all of them, really. But we did manage to pare it down. And hey, if one of you gets that...

The fairest trade gifts of them all (for the fairest mom of them all)

Once upon a time there was an online store filled with beautiful gifts from all over the world: bags, scarves, jewelry, quilts, stamps, and decor. Every purchase helped transform lives and make the world a better place.  It’s not a fairy tale, and it’s not magic, but it is a great way to shop for the special mom in your life. The shop is called Connected, and it really is filled with hundreds of unique and lovely gifts hand-made by artisans in Africa, South America, and India. Most of the goods are made by members of the Fair Trade...

The ultimate maternity camisole, made simple

I’m not sure if it’s the fact that I’m cold all the time, or just like wearing lots and lots of layers, but for many years now, a camisole has always been a staple in my wardrobe. It also continues to be, now that I’m shopping for maternity clothes again only I want a really, really good one.   I like how a good cami just smoothes everything out but with my expanding belly, the camisoles that I used to wear are quickly becoming halter tops. Not a good or comfy look. Luckily, I have discovered a line of...

Pink sunglasses: la vie en rose

Rose-colored glasses. Cliché? Or awesome fashion statement? I’m going to go with awesome. I saw these pink Oscar Magnuson sunglasses in Lucky Mag this month and was like…ooh, could I pull those off? The truth is, this kind of pink looks great on any complexion, and besides the designer shades price (and the extra duty since they ship from Paris), I could justify them 100 ways. I’m good at that. But the truth is, there are other options if you’re thinking pink, like the classic Ray-Ban wayfarers in pink at Nordstrom. Or the subtle pink Prada sunglasses from Paris...

A beautiful scarf to do beautiful things for mothers. Not just the ones who wear it.

It was only 6 months ago that I first discovered the wonderful FashionABLE scarves on a humanitarian trip to Ethiopia, and fell in love with their process–and of course their gorgeous scarves–which are doing a world of good for women and mothers in great need. In fact you all fell in love with them too–Cool Mom Picks readers helped sell out the entire store over the holiday season! So I’m beyond thrilled to announce a brand new, limited edition scarf from the organization, with a pretty awesome story behind it. The Genet Scarf is available for preorder starting today...

Bueno! The sassiest sandals for spring come from Spain

Shoe shopping with my oldest daughter, now 8, has become quite a struggle. Not only are her feet hard to fit, they’re also tiny for her age. That means the cooler older-girl styles often don’t come in her size. But that all changed when I found these gorgeous sandals. Since they arrived in our house, my daughter has not taken off her Avarcas Pons sandals, a brand I’d seen around but never actually tried. Who knew they’re handmade in Spain using soft leather and recycled tires (cool, right?).   The classic colors are the perfect casual spring and summer...

The perfect pop of color: vibrant voile scarves for almost spring

It’s almost spring. Almost. That’s what I tell myself as I pull on knee-high socks, boots, and a coat. I’m not ready for full-on pastels, but these gorgeous, block-printed scarves are a great way to dip a toe into the bright, carefree colors of spring.  The founder of Rikshaw Designs, which we introduced to our readers years ago, has traveled the globe to bring traditionally block-printed textiles into the design world. We love the luscious bedding and clothing for women and children, but I’m especially digging the 100% cotton voile scarves. Especially for spring. Because some of us can’t...

5 hot emerald green accessories you’ll want to wear long past St. Patrick’s Day

Every year on St. Patrick’s Day, I scour my closet for something–anything–green, and end up with the same sad sweater. Though this year, with emerald green a Pantone Color of Spring 2013, I’m seeing lots of gorgeous wearables that I can recommend all year long–not just on March 17.   –Christina This upcycled jersey t-shirt necklace looks so bright and spring-y against a white tee. It’s such a fresh change from my regular necklace picks. I also love the removable flower clip which I would wear exactly as shown. Way cooler than a “Kiss Me I’m Irish” button. (and only...

Eco-excellent wooden eyewear (and each purchase plants a tree!)

If you’re pining for cool shades, here’s a collection that might bamboozle you. Because they’re made of woods like pine and bamboo. Whether you’re on the hunt for cool frames or love collecting unusual, attention-grabbing sunglasses, I’m digging how Anni Shades delivers on style and eco-consciousness. Each pair of glasses frames is made by hand in Ohio of exotic, eco-sourced wood in a special process that’s fairly detailed, but they got me with “no stains or paints.” The sunglasses automatically come with SOLA by Carl Zeiss lenses, or you can have your own prescription lenses dropped right in. Stylish maternity wear for working mamas who want to work it

If I were pregnant right about now (and I am so not–just to be clear) I would be all over the new spring maternity line at Hatch Collection. They make the kind of splurgy, sophisticated pieces for working mamas who need to invest in a few great items they can live in without feeling frumpy. I think my favorite is the slouch dress which comes in either a comfy jersey (my vote!) or a few washable silk-poly options in bright, fun colors. It’s the kind of versatile dress you can wear to work with great shoes; over leggings on...

Blue is the new whatever color you like wearing best

While the whole fashion world has been overly focused on emerald green lately as the favored Spring Pantone Color of 2013, I’m still a little more charmed by all the blues I’m seeing. The right blue can actually be an awesome neutral, and a great alternative to black, as I’m finding recently. (Let me say, as a New Yorker, anything that can gently pry me away from black is a Very Big Deal.) Here are just a few investment pieces that I have my eye on this season to up the fashion quotient without a complete wardrobe overhaul. I...

The Year of the Snake: coming soon to a shoe near you

You’d have to know that the Chinese Year of the Snake, which starts on February 10, would be the perfect excuse for designers to get down with some snakeskin prints. Which is perhaps why we’re starting to see the print everywhere, including this one unexpected place: the Converse shop. The Chuck Taylor Year of the Snake line includes some really fabulous styles for both women and men in the Converse “Premium” category. In other words, $100 sneakers. But what awesome $100 sneakers they are. The pricey ones are real snakeskin on a leather upper (I’m crushing on the tawny...

It’s National Hat Day! Why not celebrate with a new hat?

Cover your noggins, people! It’s Hat Day, a tragically overlooked holiday, in my opinion. Here it is, January 15. And to my knowledge, there have been exactly zero fez parties planned, zero berets exchanged, and zero Viking helmet cards sent. A crying shame, particularly given how much we here at CMP like hats, hats, and more hats. And so in honor of National Hat Day, I’m going to let you in on two little hat secrets of mine. I’m talking hats so spectacular, you will get stopped in the streets daily by people wanting to know where you got...

Is Rent the Runway worth it?

With a business trip covering the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on the horizon and nary a sparkle or fun party dress in my wardrobe, I figured I’d use the cool coupon I received in my monthly BirchBox subscription and give Rent the Runway a test ride. I’ve heard a few awesome success stories about this website that allows you to rent designer dresses, shoes, jewelry and accessories for a fraction of the purchase price, and I figured Las Vegas nightlife would be the perfect test. So I ordered two dresses to be delivered to my hotel room...

Rock star science shirts for rock star kids

The good folks at PACT have what they call “a movement designed as a clothing company.” (Love.) Each season, they design a collection of clothing inspired by someone doing something good. And then they donate money from the sales of the clothing to that very cause. ...

Hair ties that are way prettier than a hair tie should be

I’m not one to get too excited about hair bands, but when I saw the ones from Emi-Jay, I gasped. Seriously.
