Geez, Target! Change a few signs in your store and you blow up the whole entire Internet! In the past, we’ve discussed our issues with labeling girls toys vs. boys toys, as opposed to just calling them, oh…you know. BLOCKS. And DOLLS. Well, apparently Target has been listening to our podcast (ha) because when they revealed their plans to remove gender-based signs from Target stores, the bigger surprise was some of the negative response.
Aw, Internet Outrage. You’re so entertaining.
Catch our thoughts on the oddly controversial news, plus more fun chat on this week’s SPAWNED with Kristen and Liz. You’ll feel like you’re hanging out right here around the kitchen table, with us. (Or hiding in the aisles of Target behind the jock straps, giggling like pre-teens.)

Target’s post on A Bullseye View to remove gender-based signs from Target stores.
Cue outrage! If you dare, read the comments on Target’s Facebook page. Please don’t troll, even if it’s easy. (This guy did.)
We even experienced minor outrage about our recent feature on Lot801’s gender-neutral clothes for kids
Turns out, this whole pink and blue thing is all about marketing. Read this history of dressing babies in either pink or blue and one of Liz’s favorite books about marketing to girls, Cinderella Ate my Daughter by Peggy Orenstein.

Thank you ladies for always cracking me up. I listen while pumping at work and it passes the time.
The Target outrage is comical to me. I think it comes from a place where parents are worried that gender “freedom” for their children will make it more likely for their children to be homosexual or transgender which is utterly laughable.
I, for one, love it. I have 2 young boys and I want them to grow up in a world where they can freely choose hobbies and toys based solely on their interests…not what society thinks a boy should like. Although my 4 year old has thus far not expressed interest in dolls, it would be awesome for more gender neutral baking, dress-up, pretend play toys to exist. When I was prepping for baby #2, I looked for some toys to get him interested in having a baby in the house and the gender bias was very apparent. Even without it being verbalized, he understands. He knows that the pink aisle is for girls and he won’t even go looking in that aisle. I am excited about this change.
