Two new family CD’s by groups who usually play for us old folks

I’ve come across two CDs from musicians who usually perform for adults, but have recently turned their collective talent toward the music for the younger set. Using distinct voices, a whole slew of instruments and music grounded in folk, country and Americana styles, I can only hope Rani Arbo and Earthworm Ensemble decide to put out more music for kids in the future. Earthworm Ensemble has taken a detour from their alt-Americana band alter egos, I See Hawks in LA, to put out this self-titled CD.This collaborative effort presents the world from a kid’s point of view, but after listening to...

Gilt Groupe goes maternity. Whoo!

Do you ever have that dream–the one where you go to a big, magical store, and everything is shiny and pretty and on a 50% off sale? I do, and I’m usually riding a glittery pink unicorn with shopping baskets as saddle bags. That’s why I’ve been ogling the sparklies on Gilt Groupe and their amazing flash sales on carefully curated, high-profile brands. We’re talking Fendi, Badgley Mischka, and high end kids clothing at Cosco prices. But what’s particularly cool is that if you join Gilt today, you can feast your eyes (and credit card) on their first-ever maternity...

Talk about Pop Art

I’m a huge fan of Robert Subuda and Matthew Reinhart’s pop up children’s books. My son’s copies from the Encyclopedia Prehistorica series show the wear and tear of well-read books. So why am I not surprised that I am awestruck by their beautiful pop-up note cards collection? The cards are breathtakingly elegant and the Blossoms designs are a creative way of giving someone flowers for Mother’s Day that won’t end up dead and in the garbage within the week. Other three-dimensional wonders include cakes and hot air balloons. The sets contain four cards of two designs, with envelopes, for...

Funky + simple + handmade = SOLD.

My very favorite word is cupcake, but I’m also a huge fan of funky, simple, and handmade. Luckily, those are the specialties of Mountain Aven Baby. Well, maybe not the cupcake part. But the other three. We see loads of bibs and blankets, but what makes WAHM-run Mountain Aven Baby special are the eye-catching fabrics and meticulous artistry. We’re not talking clearance cotton from Hancock Fabrics here. Her bibs — many of which are on sale now — are backed with lush chenille and splashed with gorgeous, unusual designs from hedgehogs to vegetables to sock monkeys. The reversible dresses...

Keepsake lockets for moms take a fabulous turn

Motherhood is more about the journey than the finish line– although I admit I dream of the day they’re in college and I can have a white couch. Motherhood is an adventure. It’s chaotic, muddled, and beautiful. It’s anything but static. This locket’s like that, too. Instead of the usual stamped names you see on most personalized jewelry, the gorgeous and unusual personalized sterling silver Scrawling Locket by CMP favorite Julian & Co. takes a different turn. You get a total of 49 characters divided up into six different spaces, so you can immortalize a unique take on Mom’s Excellent Adventure. Go for the full birth details of the new baby. Or brand the proud mom with the names of all her kids– and a gold medal, if she’s got six. Give Grandma one locket to take the place of all those jangling grandkid charms. Or just choose the tender words that describe how you feel about her: loving, tough, strong, lovely. That sort of thing. Make sure to grab your custom locket now for Mother’s Day because personalization and delivery takes about two weeks. Then get a box of tissues, because the only thing better than burned pancakes and sticky kid hugs is knowing that your family appreciates all the hard work you do along the way. Order custom lockets and other sterling jewelry such as the Scrawling...

Three dresses for Mother’s Day

Despite our incredible devotion to tracking down the most awesome Mother’s Day gifts around here, we recognize that not every family is gift-y. Sometimes it’s indeed the thought that counts, and that a beautiful card inscribed with a heartfelt sentiment goes a long way. The origami dress Mother’s Day cards from Kitty Kat Kards are just the thing to make more of a statement than your typical off-the-shelf card. Each of the three dresses are hand folded with love in Maryland, and subtle rhinestones are the finishing touch. It would be the perfect accompaniment to a donation to her...

Storing the kids’ artwork in plain view.

For the last five years, I have done my best to figure out what the heck to do with my oldest daughter’s awesome artwork. As you probably know, the fridge display only works for so long, and while framing it would be nice, how do I pick just one? Well, thank you Lil DaVinci Art Cabinets for completely solving my dilemma. These super cool, affordable, and attractive modern frames allow you to display your kids’ art, and store it too. Up to 50 pieces, in fact. Just open up the glass door, place the art in the spring-loaded pocket,...

Not your mama’s flowers

Saying you love me with flowers is great, but on Mother’s Day, please don’t get me a smiling kitten n’ rainbow mug full of carnations and daisies. I’d much rather have a bed of bamboo accented by one gorgeous orchid, or maybe some sparkling glass bowls full of peonies. Please. The floral arrangements from Floral Art LA in the hip Abbot Kinney stretch of Venice really strike a chord with me, and that chord is Wow, I wish flowers never, ever died, because I want to look at this every day of my life. They offer classic and modern...

A cool new twist on the old number and letter kids’ shirts

With my kids still completely obsessed with their age and name, I’m always on the look out for cool letter and number t-shirts that won’t break the bank. Who knew I could look no further than American Apparel for exactly what I’ve been looking for. You don’t have to be a font junkie to appreciate the new Helvetica t-shirts (left) which are a great way to celebrate a kid’s name without necessarily draping their entire moniker on a shirt. Add the very cool color combinations and you’ve got one heckuva cool tee. If you’ve got a birthday boy or...
