Okay, so imagine if NERDS were actually healthy

As my dentist will attest, I was a big candy fan as a kid, and I was definitely a nerd for NERDS. (My favorite was the split box with cherry on one side and watermelon on the other.) Cut to 2011, when my children think plain yogurt with honey is a sugary treat. Oh, how the times have changed. And yet, in a way, they haven’t. If you combine that yogurt with the NERDS of yore, you get a brilliant snack that my kids adore. They’re called Yo’Drops. Yo’ Drops are another nutritious hit from our pals at Revolution...

Renting a maternity dress? Totally.

When I was six months pregnant with my second baby, the company I worked for was putting on a big, fancy shindig. Said shindig required me to go on a stage and speak in front of 800 people. I started to stress–mostly about what to wear. I wanted a stylish, non-mall-bought maternity dress–but I didn’t want to spend tons of cash on a frock I wouldn’t be able to wear ever again, no matter how designer it was. Mine for Nine, where were you 18 months ago? The site is a treasure trove of maternity dresses that would normally...

The case of the disappearing boo-boos

My daughter is in the beautiful beginning stages of tree-climbing, which has left her with the usual variety of not-at-all-serious scrapes and bruises. I think she loves finding a new boo-boo to cover up with a Band-Aid as much as she loves trying to climb the tree.  Problem is, we just discovered she has a mild latex allergy–her favorite bandages are now off-limits. Luckily, there’s something new for her to use on her miniature bumps and bruises. Boo-Boo Cover-Up has the healing power of ointment mixed with the camouflaging capabilities of a bandage. It looks like a tube of concealer,...

Swedish designs that turn your kids’ walls into wow

I am sitting at my computer right this very second, drooling over the beautiful illustrated posters of Ingela P Arrhenius, who I discovered earlier this year. Her work just went on sale at Fab.com, my latest flash sale obsession, and at these prices–if you love them, you’ll want to grab them now. Her midcentury inspired graphics are lovely for kids rooms, especially the circus series (shown) or the whimsical animal prints.  Thought I might like some of them in a kitchen or bathroom too. Blank walls – I’m putting you on notice. –Liz Find the Snyder + The Swedes...

Butt Art that isn’t raunchy, promise

As all parents know, kids laugh at the word “butt.” There is something very funny about a word that is used constantly as a conjunction, a sometime preposition and also as a word for your behind. What could be funnier than that to a five year old? The answer? Nothing. Now combine the humor of a butt with a bona fide art book. It doesn’t get any cooler than Everything Butt Art at the Zoo. The premise is awesome: all of the animals that you see at the zoo can be drawn with the fabulous gluteus maximus as the...

Mothers of Intention: Using our outside voices

My interest in politics has ebbed and flowed over the years, but since I’ve become a mother, public policy has taken on a whole new personal relevance for me. I’ve got three kiddos whose futures will be affected by the decisions of political leaders, from our local school board all the way up to the federal government. That’s a pretty sobering realization. But it’s an exciting one too, and that’s what prominent political blogger and mom Joanne Bamberger showcases in her new book, Mothers of Intention. Featuring an array of powerful essays by bloggers — including our own Kristen...

Poster sized goodness

Sarah Jane is wildly talented–something Cool Mom Picks discovered way back in 2007. Her prints are whimsical and magical in a way that would make Clement Hurd and The Runaway Bunny proud. I love the simplicity and the talent that beckons from the page. Now, fans of Sarah Jane’s prints can find them beautifully presented on poster size cardstock. You will have a hard time picking a favorite– I am partial to this wonderful London print and I am also digging Snuggle Me. Unfortunately not all of her images are available in poster size yet. Yet. –Eva Sarah Jane...

Children’s art that won’t give you a toothache

Back when I was pregnant, I became obsessed with finding the perfect artwork to adorn baby M’s walls. I had almost no budget and was put off by most everything in the big stores–hearts, butterflies and safaris? Oh my. So I took to Etsy. Two years later I continue to stalk the site for new artists to make my gift giving more gratifying which is how I came by Rachel Dodge’ shop. After spending just a few minutes at Apple Blossom Print, I was in love with the artwork–especially this robot alphabet print proclaiming knowledge is the future–and I felt an instant...

Kids’ furniture that’s more than just kids’ furniture

Every city parent knows that if you going to commit to bringing a new piece of furniture into your precious and very limited home space it better be something useful and pleasant to look at. So kudos to the brilliant minds of Chadwick and Joe, the imaginative team at Klinko Kids Furniture. They’ve developed 3-in-1 Little Frog, a handy little piece for toddlers that can be a pint-sized reading chair, lounge chair and play table all in one convertible piece of furniture. And dig this, there is also an inexpensive accessory that can turn it into a rocking chair...

The Brita water bottle. Pretty smart.

While lots of companies are trying to build a better water bottle (just search water bottle on our site sometime), I’m actually surprised it took Brita so long to get into the game. But now here they are, with a sports bottle that has one of their filters built right in. Fill up the substantial, BPA-free Brita Bottle right from a water fountain or sink, and the filter, which is attached to the sippie part at the top, filters out “chlorine taste and odor” as you drink. Note they say chlorine taste–not actual chlorine. So don’t be filling it with pool water. But it does mean if you need a refill on the road or at the gym, you can feel better about your choices. The filter needs replacing about every 20 gallons or so, so if your kids are downing one of these bottles a day, that’s only once every four¬†months. It does come with a huge Brita plastic wrap label over it but fortunately, it’s easy to peel off. Then you’ve just got a nice, big blue sports bottle, and some well-hydrated kids. –Liz Find the Brita Water Bottle online from shops like Target, Walgreens, and our affiliate...

A stroller sunshade that makes sense

I can get a little crazy about sun protection (just ask my husband). I douse myself in SPF 30 every single day–no matter the time of year–and I run for the shade at the playground and the park. So it’s only natural that I want the same safe sun vigilance for my kids. I’ve been looking for a good stroller sunshade–a non-black one that still lets my sons see the world–and I finally found one. Thank you Maclaren! The new Sunshade from Maclaren is a smart and stylish light grey color. I never understood why so many stroller sunshades...

Affordable organic kids’ clothes that aren’t just available in “natural”

When I’m shopping for clothes for my kids, I find it a challenge to get good organic cotton. Sure, it exists, but sometimes it’s way out of our budget and the rest of the time it seems to be only available in “natural.” (I know you know what I’m talking about.) [don’t miss a terrific gift card giveaway after the jump!] When I discovered Mini Mioche I did a little dance of joy. Not only are the clothes nicely constructed and very adorable, they also fulfill my wildest fantasies of being both organic and not way out of my...

Ergo and Petunia Pickle Bottom make babywearing oh so pretty

My first Ergo was a lot like my first boyfriend. Solid, comfortable, and dependable, if a little thick. But not pretty. Not swoon-worthy. Then Petunia Pickle Bottom got involved. In a babywearing version of She’s All That (or Can’t Buy Me Love, or Clueless–you get the picture) The Ergo got an extreme makeover, and now it’s one of the prettiest baby carriers on the block. For along time, the main complaint of Ergo carriers was that they weren’t stylish. Well, the new collection of Petunia Picklebottom Ergo buckle baby carriers includes three gorgeous prints in soft organic cotton, and...
