Threadless and Baggu are a tote bag perfect match

Does this rainbow umbrella design look familiar? It probably does–it’s just one of the designs you’ll find over at Threadless, which recently teamed up with Cool Mom Picks favorite Baggu to produce a whole series of recycled cotton canvas totes (Baggu’s “duck bag”) in a variety of cool options. I’ve always loved that Baggu put a sturdy shoulder strap on these bags–much as I love a conventional tote, sometimes after a visit to the library some extra support is welcome–and now I can even pick one of my favorite artist renderings to make it even cooler. It looks like...

That’s right honey, you can’t win

While I’ve never taken my husband to task for only buying three lemons instead of the dozen I requested (“Who asks for a dozen lemons anyway?”), I have to confess that I avoid sending him to the grocery store because…well, whatever he gets is usually wrong. So when I saw this reusable grocery bag from CMP fave Twisted Twee, I felt like it was made just for me. Or actually, just for my husband. Hand printed on washable cotton, “Whatever I get, it will be wrong” is absolutely right. I think I’ll buy it and stash it in his...

A pretty reusable bag for all your gross, smelly, leaky stuff

I have a drawer in the kitchen full of plastic bags. As much as I’d like to consider myself a green(ish) mom, it’s the one thing I can’t say no to at the grocery store. The reason? I use the bags to transport leaky sippy cups and discard stinky diapers while on the go. But all that eco-waste (and guilt) may be coming to an end. The Stuff Sack by Go Gaga. is entirely waterproof, leak proof, odor proof and stain proof (that’s a lot of proofs!). Which means you can stick unfinished cartons of Yo Baby, half-eaten bagels...

It’s in the bag.

We’re now formally in the “handing-someone-a-bottle-of wine” season, and while most of us can simply stick a bow on it and pass it on, there are times when that bottle needs a little more oomph than a plain brown paper bag or a crinkled sheet of tissue paper. The Wine OH (get it?) is a substantial, reusable gift bag, part of the Love Reusable Bags line and it’s very cute.  They offer a number of options: Bag the wine for your brother-in-law in the businessy Cosmic Stripes, or tuck some sparkling (nonalcoholic) cider in a cheery plaid bag you bring...

Wrap it up to go

I love the hustle of the holiday season: cooking, shopping and giving are three of my favorite things. What I really don’t like is finding the right wrapping paper for my latest treasures – and it can get ugly when I have multiple smaller gifts, for teachers and neighbors. We’re talking last-minute wrapping in the form of torn tissue paper held together with stickers, which doesn’t look so hot, especially if those gifts are–shall we say–somewhat modest. Sometimes a gal really needs something to help with the upsell.  Check out the personalized items from momma Bridgett Edwards at Perideau...

Now Envirosax is just kidding around

I can’t tell you for sure what longtime CMP favorite Envirosax was thinking with the creation of their new Kid Series reusable bags, but I can tell you what I thought when I saw them: this is going to make demanding help with the groceries even easier! No more bickering about who takes what bag; I can simply tell my daughter to grab the paper dolls bag and direct my son to the rocket bag shown here. Awesome. And I’m sure these eco-friendly reusable bags can do double duty as overnight bags for sleepovers or sub in for a paper...

The final goodbye to plastic bags

I switched over to reusable grocery bags at the supermarket a long time before I managed to break the plastic produce bag habit, I confess. Because back then, the only “produce” options seemed to be bulky cotton bags that added weight (and therefore cost). But with Flip & Tumble’s new mesh produce bag set, you’re equally good to go at the farmer’s market or the grocery store. They fold down to next to nothing when not in use, and they’re machine washable, too.  While you’re there, check out their new 24-7 Minis, too. How adorable are those? Perfect for kids...

For the kid who eats like a bird

I realize that school is now in full swing, but if you have yet to find the perfect lunch box, or if your house is the mysterious Bermuda Triangle of lunch bags like mine, you can’t have too many reusable lunch bags. Particularly if they’re like these super cute canvas lunch bags from Romp. The bright, adorable designs on the canvas lunch bags for kids, like the birds (pictured), take me back to the days of the good old brown paper bag. Except with canvas and not paper. And they’re not brown. And you don’t have to scribble your kid’s name on it...

Guilt free snack packing

I know, I know – we keep featuring reusable snack bags! What can I say, there are so many to choose from these days. Our job is just to pare down the cool ones for you, and we’ve got a couple more options for you, whatever your own personal lunch packing needs. The completely lead-free, PVC-free, and pthalate free ReSnackIt bags are my own first foray into the world of reusable snack bags and I’m pleased to say that I’m a complete convert. Even better, so are my kids. What differentiates these reusable bags from others we’ve featured, besides...

Because no one ever compliments you on that cute Ziploc.

My job as a parent has always been playing defense, which is why I’m the one who slathers the family in SPF 50, sorts the recycling, and saves fifty cents on black beans with a coupon. My favorite strategy these days is reusing bags, and my favorite reusable bags as of now are these EcoStuffers from Sedilu Green on Etsy. The reusable snack bags are made with one layer of adorable 100% cotton and an inside layer of antimicrobial, waterproof, phthlate-free and BPA-free FDA food-safe nylon. They close securely with Velcro and are super easy to clean — you...

Buy buy birdie

I’m a self-confessed bag junkie so it’s no big surprise that I flipped when I saw the Stack of Birds tote from Spur Stor. It’s oversized enough to fit all my beach stuff and cute enough for me to use for every day stuff. And, of course it’s perfect for grocery shopping, because who doesn’t use reusable bags nowadays, right? [don’t miss the great offer after the jump] The totes are only $24 and are printed in orange (my fave) and aqua on 100% natural cotton. And, I don’t know why, but the funky retro bird design just makes...

Snack, wash, dry, repeat

I’ll never be the eco-mama who reuses plastic wrap or gives up the soft toilet paper for the stuff that feels like newspaper. Mostly I look for small changes I can live with, and one of those has been cutting down on my reliance on disposable plastic snack bags. There are just so many good alternatives out there, like the reusable snack bags from Itzy Ritzy. I’ve learned I much prefer the zipper close here to velcro ones elsewhere, to keep those pretzels and raisins put. And the waterproof (but PVC-free) lining means you can use it for apple...

Sesame Street goes green

I admit that I’m a complete sucker for most things Sesame Street, even since my kids have outgrown it. And now I’ve got even more reasons to invest in some muppetry, since discovering the terrific new Sesame Street Envirosax reusable shopping bags, found at CMP fave shop Cattiwampus. Aside from the very cool graphics, these washable, reusable bags are a really great way to promote going green, even for the under 5 set (heck, try under 35 set). Think of them for packed picnic lunches, library books, dance clothes, or up to 40 pounds of groceries (seriously). And I...

Which brings us to Olive & Myrtle’s Recycled Cotton Tote Bags. If you are going to rock a reusable tote for eco- and human-friendliness, these are the ones. They are made with organic cotton, printed with water-based ink, and are Fair Wage and Fair Labor certified. ...

There’s way more to Japanese pop art than Hello Kitty

When I was in Japan a few years ago, I tried desperately to pack my suitcase full with as much adorableness as possible. But lucky for me (and you), I don’t have to endure the super long plane ride to stock up on imported Japanese goodies thanks to new find Japanistic. Take the Shinzi Katoh cotton tote bags, which feature the illustrator’s signature whimsical artwork that we’ve already completely fallen in love with (Remember these bento lunch boxes?) And I’m thinking that we might have to forgo the candy hearts for my oldest next week and stuff one of those totes with the adorable Elph +...

Reusable grocery totes fit for the opera

We’ve long been a fan of Envirosax as a great, affordable option when it comes to going to reusable bags, and now they’ve gone and stepped up the chic another notch: Their new La Boheme series is “inspired by a fusion of the romanticism of Bohemia and the ideals of the Art Nouveau movement.” Okay so they’re still reusable nylon bags and not fit to wear out with your opera coat and pearls. But the five new lush designs will make you feel pretty fancy even though you’re hauling up to 44 pounds. If you’re looking to complete your...

Editors Best of 2009: The kids snacks, lunchboxes, cookbooks, and grownup food

The older our kids get, the more we’re focused on the what, why, when and how of feeding them. It’s been exciting discovering the growing number of products and resources to help steer our kids away from the McWhatever and onto food that qualifies as healthy and yummy. Kristen: All of my kids love to snack on the organic baby food from Ella’s Kitchen (at top). Just don’t tell them that there happens to be broccoli mixed in with their pears. Liz: I have become completely addicted to the organic maple-almond butter from Justin’s. I mean, uh my kids have. And those little snacks-sized squeeze...

Lovely gift boxes that take the ugh out of gift wrapping.

I am beyond grateful for all the pretty boxes and gift bags out there because I am 1. Totally spazzy with wrapping paper (seriously, it’s sad) and 2. Totally impatient with long gift wrap lines at department stores. Let’s also add 3. Totally annoyed with the $5 gift wrap charges that some shops want to bilk you with over the holidays. So here are a few cool holiday gift boxes and gift bags I’ve come across recently that make things easy for those of you like me: Martha Stewart Crafts does a smashing job with the holiday cookie and...

Get your freak on

I’ve seen my neighbor’s tween struggling with a full school backpack, so I may have to play Santa and pass a Freak-O-Bag her way for those days when a few extra books threaten to topple her onto her back. Now, even my mom knows how smart it is to keep a portable reusable bag folded up and clipped to her pocketbook, but trust me, these are no grandma shopping bags. Instead, the Freak-O-Bag normally looks like a little creature dangling from wherever it is clipped. But, when needed, the “pets” transform into a generous 16″x16″ reusable tote. The original...
