Farm to Baby – A fresh approach to baby food, delivered straight to your door

First baby food moved out of the jar and into the freezer. Then it went organic. (And organic some more.) Then, gourmet. Now, we’ve discovered a new service that puts it all together, offering delicious, fresh foods for baby made with ingredients like hubbard squash and quince straight from the farm–and delivering it right to your door. Farm to Baby NYC is a new subscription-based baby food delivery service in New York City, and we can’t wait for it to expand. They use locally grown produce, picked just days before being gently cooked in their kitchen, to deliver fresh...

A special book for a mama’s special thoughts

When our daughter was born, I did what so many mamas do: I started a baby book. I wanted to capture everything about her, along with the wonderment of being a new mom; I’d lost my own mother to cancer a year earlier, to the date, and I thought writing about motherhood would somehow connect grandmother, mom, and baby. At least I hoped so. But because our daughter arrived five weeks early, I wasn’t entirely prepared–so the “baby book” is a little slapdash. It’s, uh, not even a book. It’s an ever-growing Word file. Inspiring? Not so much. That’s...

KaZAM – a balance bike that thinks about your feet

If you are looking for a balance bike for your eager-to-ride toddler or preschooler, get ready to weigh your options because in the past, we’ve found great eco friendly balance bikes made of birch and ones made in a lightweight, long-lasting composite resin. There is even this cool balance bike that grows with your child.  And now, to make your choice a little more difficult, I discovered a balance bike at Toy Fair this year that has a nifty feature for little cruisers: A foot rest. The no-slip, flat foot rest on the KaZAM Balance Bike is one feature...

Pirates vs Ninjas, the final showdown

Ready to put an end to the old question about how one man can defeat 10 ninjas? Well if he’s a pirate in the hands of a very good checker player, it’s not only possible, it’s likely. The pirates vs ninjas checkerboard from Brooklyn artist Anna Donado of Goosegrease, is amazing both in concept and in execution. It’s all handmade and handpainted using non-toxic materials. (She specializes in cake toppers, so one would presume that she knows a little something about non-toxic paints.) Of course 34 handmade characters, the checkerboard, and a little muslin bag for storage doesn’t come...

A coloring book to inspire art, creativity and belly laughs

A little bit Shel Silverstein, a little bit Mo Willems, a little bit Seuss, a little bit Lemony Snicket, and a little bit Taro Gomi. If those names–especially together–sound like your idea of heaven on paper, then you’re going to love this awesome new coloring book for kids from Calef Brown. Dragon, Robot, Gatorbunny (yes, Gatorbunny is one thing, not two) has the subhead Pick one, draw it, make it funny! and that should give you a good sense of why your kids will never want to put it down. This wonderfully imaginative book from the illustrator of my...

Turn your child’s favorite toy into amazing artwork

I’ve always liked the idea of decorating a child’s room with fine art photographs. If the colors are great and the subject is cool, it can make a room feel so fresh and modern. So I’d say bright, colorful photos of classic children’s toys fit that bill perfectly. Especially when they’re your own children’s toys. And these come from the brand new, just opened Etsy shop of a super talented, award-winning photographer. I’m totally in love with these fine art photographs of classic toys from photographer Jamie Horton that she originally made for her own sons, from their own...

Colorblock handbags from Hayden-Harnett – be still my heart

I have absolutely loved the colorful handbag trend that’s helped get me through winter, and I’m thrilled to see it shows no signs of taking leave come spring. Which is less than a month away, incidentally. Feel free to squee at your leisure. Hayden-Harnett, my very favorite little Brooklyn handbag co that seems to be getting bigger by the minute, has a nice little lineup of new arrivals for spring. But my favorite has to be the Hayden-Harnett Mondrian tote bag in wild rose and candy apple. Even the colors sound yummy. The colorblock tote comes in five color...

A baby carrier that might be the next best thing to your womb

I think one of my biggest surprises as a new mom was that the baby was a lot easier to take care of when she was still in my big, bodacious belly. (Ha.) Well, here’s a baby carrier that’s the next best thing. [don’t miss a fantastic giveaway after the jump!] The Lulu Wrap by ellemnop is a wrap-style baby carrier that I find especially awesome for brand new babies–and brand new mommies. At first, it simply looks like over five yards of soft, stretchy fabric. But with just a little practice, you and baby will both find that...

Journey to Africa for Black History Month and beyond

Black History Month is rolling to a close, but it’s never to late to share new learning resources with your kids. Along with some great books, movies and music picks that honor African American culture and history, I have recently come upon some more terrific books and media that help expose kids of any skin color to the diversity and wonder of the continent of Africa.  –Christina We have long owned a copy of the African folk tale Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears in our home, but I love hearing James Earl Jones narrating it on the Scholastic Storybook Treasures DVD version. Like...

INKnBurn – running away from ugly running clothes

I suppose it’s not surprising that one of my favorite parts of running races, aside from the medal, has to be the Expo, where I can shop for all the coolest new running gear.  And that’s exactly what happened when I recently ran Disneyland’s Tinker Bell Half Marathon and discovered this new company that I thought you fitness mamas should know about. INKnBURN is a California-based company that combines cool artwork with tech fabrics to create running wear that’s as stylish as it is functional. I was drawn to their women’s running shorts (pictured) which I think are perfect...

Nom nom nom…blankets.

My 10 month old is teething. That means he’s chomping on virtually everything in our house. (Kind of gross when he chooses the wheels of the stroller.) I found a cool new blankie with attached teething toys, so I’m hopeful he’ll start gnawing on more appropriate things. The Teether Blankie from Petites Frites has four awesome teething toys attached to its corners. The teethers, which include a maple wooden ring, two pima cotton hand crochet shapes and a stuffed cotton gingham star, are secured to the blanket safely. Though truthfully, they’re too big to be choking hazards in the...

The Lorax movie review: Is it every bit as awesome as the book?

I am absolutely smitten with The Lorax, one of Dr. Seuss’ most powerful characters. The book has such a strong environmental message that continues to resonate within me and so many of Dr. Seuss’ fans, so I must admit that I had very high expectations for The Lorax movie, especially knowing the Despicable Me creators were behind the production. Could it possibly get the message across in a new and entertaining way while remaining authentic to the original intent? I caught a screening of it, and my answer, with complete certainty, is yes. The Lorax on film delivers in...

Bedrails for kids that are so much cooler than bedrails.

My kids graduated to a big-kid bed in need of a bedrail, right around the same time that they discovered the joys of sneaking book under the covers to “read” past their bedtime. I love their thirst for books but don’t enjoy finding books twisted into bedsheets or flung on the floor in the morning. If you too have a bedtime bookworm in a new big kid bed, take a look at this smart combo bookshelf and bedrail that keeps your sleeping child, and their books, safely in place.   Tambino’s Alpha Bookshelf Bedrail is a smart-looking way to keep...

A new spin on photo books

Scrapbooks as gifts are super sweet, even if they are a ton of work. It’s the kind of present that really makes the receiver feel special. That is why I’m really interested in a new company that’s putting a cool spin on a familiar concept. Sure, you can make photo books on lots of different websites. You can even add text to personalize it. But at Twig Tale they have created a series of books complete with text and layout that gives you a great storyboard to work with–smart for those stretched for time (and maybe creativity). Is your...

Is there anything new in the world of baby bibs? Shockingly, yes.

As much as I love how far bibs have come since my oldest was born 7 years ago, my biggest complaint has always been that they rarely stop food from getting on a kid’s collar–which also happens to be the hardest part of their clothes to wash. So I’m pleased to discover this brand new bib that solves that problem completely. Meet the Tuckaroo, the brain-child of mom of 2 Kerry Mazzacano, who like many of us, was sick of trying to get food and gook out of her kids’ collars. So she decided to do something about it...

I like the island Manhattan…

I admit to having a bit of New Yorker envy. Fortunately, I find satisfaction every so often when I visit, and someone asks me for directions. But while I may not actually ever get to live in NYC, I love that I can wear a little bit of Manhattan–or even Brooklyn–in the most subtle way. These amazing Urban Gridded Earrings from Aminimal Shop look like cool gridded shapes, but look closely and you’ll see they’re actually maps. Whether you’re a fan of downtown Manhattan (pictured) or prefer Brooklyn ‘hoods like DUMBO or Williamsburg, this is such a cool way...
