Kids’ books that take the road less traveled

It’s a Pinkalicious world, but I am not a Pinkalicious girl, and neither is my kid. We’re more into the Cowboy & Octopus thing. Of course there’s nothing wrong with loving the books prominently displayed at big box stores, because, honestly, there’s a good reason they’re popular. But there’s also an underground world of independent kids’ books– forgotten books, rare books, books that march to a different drummer. And now there’s a great and trusted way to find and capture these roguish tomes. It’s called One Potato, and it’s a lovingly run blog with corresponding shop on Amazon. One...

Candy-colored baby clothes, totally sugar-free

I love finding baby clothes that provide an antidote to the whole babies wear black thing. I mean look, if you can’t wear turquoise, pink and tangerine when you’re two, when can you? (Okay, maybe when you’re 70 and retiring in Palm Beach.) I’ve always loved Zutano for making unabashedly optimistic baby and kids clothes, and some of their new spring/summer patterns are just that. The spring line of baby clothes from Zutano has the sweetest candy-colored “Gumballs“ print for girls’ shorts, sunsuits, dresses, and shirts. Zutano founder and lead designer, Uli Belenky, designed the print to evoke a...

Web Coolness – summer tunes, summer parties, summer clothes for kids

Here are some things we’ve liked reading around the web the week. We hope you will too. Two days left to get ready for summer! Kristen shares three of her favorite UPF clothing brands for kids right in time. You might recognize MSG’s Blogger of the Month for June. These Photo Booth props would be a huge hit with the kids and the grown ups at our next shindig. (via Ohdeedoh) In time for the holiday weekend, fun ideas for a summer party. Check out our first Kids’ Music Download of the Week at Cool Mom Tech. You’ll want this...

We heart real artists

We love seeing the amazing work of independent artisans recognized on big sites–except when they don’t actually give credit to the artist. That seems to be the case with jewelry artist Stevie Koerner of tru.che, whose beautiful United/World of Love line has inspired an exact replica on a certain huge retailer’s website. In honor of all the support she’s gotten from the web today, she’s offering a fantastic discount on all her pieces. But hurry, it lasts for today only! You can score 20% off Stevie’s beautiful sterling silver jewelry, whether you’d wear the country of your heritage or...

Old Navy offers a Gay Pride tee and we love them for it

We’ve always been proud to support all types of families at Cool Mom Picks–the ones with one mommy, the ones with two mommies, the ones with no mommies at all. So we’re thrilled to see that Old Navy is doing the same, by making a stand in favor of love and tolerance with their new line of Gay Pride T-shirts launching next week. This is a pretty big corporate statement and we admire the guts. But we really like that 10% of Old Navy sales on the items will go to the It Gets Better Project, a truly amazing...

Swankify your spring wardrobe for 40% less.

If you like swanky designer clothes but not the swanky designer clothes prices, one of my favorite ever boutiques is having a 40% off sale right now that’s definitely worth a few clicks. New Yorkers can pop into Scoop in person (I love the one in the Meatpacking District), but for the rest of you, just hit the website. I’m seeing deals on items like Seven Skinny Jeans, designer handbags from labels like Philip Lim and Zac Posen, and the awesome Alice + Olivia dress shown here. (Though darn, not in my size.) Be warned, non New Yorkers—this is...

Bring home more than bug bites from camp

The first time I packed my kids up for a week of summer camp, I couldn’t get believe all the stuff they needed, even for day camp. And everything, everything, needed a name attached to it, something I unfortunately left to the last minute the first year.  This year, I’d rather spend a few moments with CMP fave Mabel’s Labels and their new camp pack, than an hour spent with a Sharpie and a cramped hand. [don’t miss a great giveaway after the jump!] The Mabel’s Labels camp labels combo pack has a specific label for just about everything...

Kids’ helmets – Hold the licensed characters

With my kids racing around our hilly neighborhood on the Mini Kick scooters we bought for their birthdays, helmets are a mandatory part of their attire. But it’s tough finding helmets that fit little heads well– and aren’t covered in characters from the TV. The Little Nutty helmets from Nutcase (ha – get it?), whose motto is “I love my brain,” make helmet-wearing fun, rather than merely a necessity, with seriously bold, clever designs for both boys and girls. But these helmets don’t just look great– they’re safe and smart too. The ABS shell with inner foam plus a...

Getting kids to write thank you notes–actually, not too hard.

I’ve been a fan of the fun color-your-own cards from Greenstarstudio since back when I discovered her cool holiday designs. So I’m happy to see some of the new cards at the shop, that can be good for slightly older kids too. The color your own cards featuring speech/thought bubbles are so smart! Kids can not only put crayon to paper and make illustrator Danamarie Hosler’s original creatures come to life, they can now fill in the bubbles with personalized messages–anything from happy birthday, to MOMMMMM which is all my four year-old wants to write these days. Grab the...

Snug like a bug in a Snug

My little ones were much happier in an upright position but usually before they were able to actually do it safely on their own. So when I heard Euro parent fave (and ours)  Mamas and Papas had launched an infant positioner seat, me, my back, and my baby were more than happy to give it a try. Their new infant positioner called the Baby Snug has made life much easier around our place since it arrived. Like similar seats (think Bumbo), you just pop your 3 month old or older into the seat so he can enjoy being off...
