Playful: A book of easy crafts for kids that will inspire imagination and play.

This summer I mapped out fun crafts to do with my kids every week, and we completed exactly zero of them. It might be because I pinned things like build a lap-sized loom and learn to weave. I’m still not giving up on making beautiful, modern and, ahem, easy crafts with kids, though, and right now I’m drawing inspiration from Playful, the new DIY book from Merrilee Liddiard.   If you haven’t seen Merrilee’s blog, MerMag, you should bookmark it right now. Her modern French aesthetic is so beautiful, and it comes through in even the simplest crafts she suggests for kids, which is what I love...

Modern fairy tale art for girls who want to write their own endings.

If you check out the Cool Mom Picks indie shop at great.ly, you’ll find a whole category of cool kids’ room decor, and now we have a new artist we’re adding to the fold that I think is just wonderful. Rosy Designs is run by a Vancouver artist, creating what feels like modern fairy tale art in the style of modern children’s book illustrations. Her Sleeping Beauty print is made all that much more sweet with the addition of a unicorn (because, unicorns). It would only be more 2014 if it were Twilight Sparkle, but I give the unicorn points for longevity. However my favorite...

Presenting the most adorable night light ever.

I’ve learned that when kids are afraid of the dark, a nightlight can be their best friend. And have you ever seen a friendlier, cuter lamp than this Little Cloud Lamp? This adorable night light might be just what I need to get my scared-of-the-dark, light sleeper daughter to quit waking me up at 2 AM. Every. Single. Night.   The Little Cloud Lamp was designed by an art duo out of NYC called FriendsWithUs, who have worked with Pharrell, and I think this piece has the same infectious happy vibe as his hit song. Even though it’s adorable and perfect for kids, it...

Teaching kids bathroom manners through art

When I was growing up, my grandmother had a lovely little poster on her bathroom wall reminding us of all kinds of old fashioned bathroom manners. My favorite was the reminder not to “keep the bath an hour or more when other folks are wanting one” because, well, I always thought that seemed like a pretty long bath. All those years reading that poster, though, and I’m now surprised (and admittedly a little disappointed) that my current bathroom wall is completely bare. But, that’s about to change now that I’ve discovered these sweet bathroom manners prints from Etsy shop, Niko + Lily. They are...

PhotoPlay! The cool coloring book gets bigger and better.

When I first got my hands on the open-ended coloring book Fotoplay! back in 2012, I fell in love with the way photographer M. J. Bronstein used her snapshots as prompts, encouraging kids  to draw all over them to create their own personal masterpiece. Her new coloring book, PhotoPlay!: Doodle. Design. Draw. is just as cool, and with more than double the pages to keep kids engaged for a good long time on a road trip or a rainy day. Every page in PhotoPlay! features an interesting black-and-white photograph with a prompt or idea for how to finish the picture, like Jesse and...

Sweet dreams are made of these.

My daughter’s baby mobile came with the crib and featured four demented and hungry-looking rabbits, so I don’t know why I’m surprised she had sleep issues. Whether you prefer hearts or stars, they’re sure to bring sweet dreams when dangling overhead. So we had the best time checking out all the new Minted birth announcements, cards, artwork and baby gifts, seeing as how they’re one of our favorite stationers–and one of our favorite longtime sponsors. What does the fox say? Let me tell you the time.

I was lucky enough to receive a Tree by Kerri Lee baby gift from my co-publisher Liz when I had my fourth daughter and it’s one of my favorite pieces. Her work has appeared many times in our baby shower gift guide, and while I’m in love with everything of hers that we’ve featured, these new animal clocks are my brand new favorite.   The adorable wooden fox clock (above) is the newest addition to her clock collection, and I find it irresistible, although those of you hot on the hedgehog trend the hedgehog clock is a close second. Handmade wall art that’s so very very pretty.

I recently discovered the Australian shop Castle and Things and fell in love with their handmade wall art. The graphics and text-oriented artwork is so up my alley. Inspirational quote posters have been a trend lately, and personally, I love it. But these pieces I just found take the art form to the next level. Look around the shop and find handmade wall art of vintage French linen, flax Belgian linen, wool, velvet and even moleskin. They are gorgeous. And with a spendy price tag to match. As in, really spendy. This is definitely artwork for collectors looking for...

Honoring Black History Month with inspiring quotes from Maya Angelou

The history of Black Americans is filled with stories of inspiration and strength, so in honor of Black History Month, I was so happy to find artwork inspired by one of my favorite poets, Maya Angelou. Each piece features quotes that have been turned into artwork and speak of that resilience, hope, and courage. I also love how universal they are in their messaging, and how her beautiful words speak to all kinds of people. Wise words for us all. Etsy’s Finding Sunshine Rae creates typographical prints on photo paper (at top) which feature a mix of lettering and colors to spell out...

The red balloon

I adore simple graphic art for kids’ rooms that isn’t necessarily too babyish–I’ve witnessed firsthand how fast children’s tastes can change. And the graphical Big Red Balloon Print spotted at Brika is a great find. Designed by Becky Hui Chan of Honey & Bloom, she makes the kind of simple graphic designs in strong colors that look great anywhere from a nursery to a playroom to an adult’s bedroom. And yet she has a sense of playfulness that instantly has her pegged as a cool mom. Suddenly, I want to go watch The Red Balloon on Netflix. Hm, wonder why....
