Chocolate LEGOs! Suddenly everything is awesome, after all.

Our house contains roughly six million LEGOs, from teeny tiny pieces that can’t be seen until they are rattling inside the vacuum, to giant blocks the size of bricks. And yet, I’m coveting more bricks. At least when they’re chocolate LEGOs created by Japanese artist Akihiro Mizuuchi. Aren’t they amazing? (And probably less painful to step on too. If a little messier.)   Not only are they edible, they’re functional. The design of the molds is so precise that Mizuuchi even built little characters out of his chocolate LEGOs, which feature a tiny LEGO on each circular connector — just like the real plastic version. Mizuuchi’s...

Everything is awesome when you’re part of a custom Lego family portrait

When it comes to family portraits, everything is awesome when you don’t have to wear matching shirts and comb everyone’s hair. With Legos, this is possible, and everyone’s going to look fabulous. Plus, you won’t have that one photo where everyone is smiling and looks great–except for the kid who had to make a monster face. These Lego Family Portrait prints from Peanutoak Print in Lisbon, Portugal are a great way to capture your family in a playful way that appeals to kids and doesn’t require them to say cheese. Just tell the artist what everyone looks like, and she’ll...

Smart toys for girls that defy the pink aisle. In other words, no princesses, ballerinas or “fashionistas,” whatever career that is.

This week at Toy Fair, I must say a progressive mama like me had a much harder time than expected scoping out smart toys for girls that defy the pink aisle. In other words, the girl dolls and figures were wearing something beyond princess garb or sparkly pink lace tulle. To be clear, I have no problem at all with ballerinas or fashion design kits or or traditional little baby dolls swathed in pink gingham–we feature plenty of them here But I have always wanted my daughters (and all the boys out there too!) to have choices. And if...

President’s Day Activity: Try building the White House

In honor of  Presidents Day, and this day off from school (let’s be honest), I like the idea of devoting a little time to building a replica of the White House with LEGO bricks. The  White House Lego Set  from their Architecture Series will let your kids create a mini version of the place where Lincoln and so many subsequent US leaders slept, legislated, and did things I probably don’t want to know about. We could finish it in a lot less time than it would take for us to drive down to our nation’s Capitol, plus, once built, it looks...

The Oscars best picture nominees reimagined with Legos

While I thought the Lego movie was a great film (with its own terrific movie poster art), what might be even cooler is seeing every Oscar nominee for best picture recreated with Legos. Of course since that would take years–and I haven’t the slightest idea what Minifigs they could possibly find to represent the women in Wolf of Wall Street–the next best thing: making all the film’s movie posters made out of Legos.     You can find them all Yahoo Movies which it seems worked together with Sony Pictures to design them. And they are awesome. Of course Leonardo...

The Lego Movie Review – A real block buster.

As the cultural discussion continues about building toys for girls and gender specific toy aisles, let me start by saying that my girls have been talking non-stop about The Lego Movie since they first saw a preview for it months ago. They are fans of everything Lego from the classic sets to the movie themed sets to Lego Friends, which means that sitting in the theater watching an early screening of the movie, they thought they died and went to block heaven. Now this movie could have been terrible. Really. In less adept hands it might be a pat, cheaply produced, plot-light franchise to...
